Philosophy | Current Releases
While many argue the best wine is made in the vineyard, it is also due to the skill of the winemaker. Rudi Bauer needs little introduction and is acknowledged as one of New Zealand's top Pinot Noir winemakers. Since the vineyard began its first small production he has been making Pisa Range Estate wines under contract at his Quartz Reef winery.
The Pisa Range Estate label was launched with the 2000 vintage. Our philosophy is to produce an 'Estate' wine – a wine that truly reflects the site and 'terroir'. As a result the winemaker is involved all the way along the 'vine to wine' chain with decisions made on canopy management and bunch thinning to ensure the best possible fruit is brought into the winery at harvest.
Traditional gentle handling of the fruit is practiced in the winery with some whole bunch pressing. Clones are barrelled separately in French oak barriques (one-third new) for twelve months. The wine is kept in bottle for around twelve months prior to release. |

Australian Gourmet Traveller WINE MAGAZINE - Apr/May 2011
2008 Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Pinot Noir
(5 Stars), 95 Points
"Strong plum and black cherry aroma with a suggestion of violets. Supple, elegant wine that's more sinewy than previous vintages but shows typical power and a lingering finish. This wine must surely be one of the stars of the vintage."
PURE GOLD – 2010 Romeo Bragato Awards
WINE ANORAK - Jamie Goode UK - February 2010
2008 Pisa Range Estate Black Poplar Block Pinot Noir
93/100
"This was more of a vineyard vintage, where growers had to be careful about canopy management. Shy nose with some mineral notes. The palate shows richness with lovely smooth elegant fruit and a nice minerality. Ripe and full yet smooth with lovely cherryish fruit. Smooth texture."
