"This has a rocky, earthy nose - good sense of terroir here with fine definition. Dark cherry, a touch of strawberry and undergrowth, but it is that stony quality that prevails. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, nice weight, very natural and perhaps lacking a touch of tension towards the finish. But it has a graceful quality to it and the finish is silky smooth. Pisa Range Estate wins London Gold
Corks were popping at Pisa Range Estate in Cromwell yesterday after the winery won a gold medal at one of the world's most prestigious wine competitions. Pisa Range Estate 'Black Poplar Block' Pinot Noir was awarded gold - best in class at the 2006 International Wine & Spirit Competition announced in Surrey, England yesterday. The win was a great achievement for both Central Otago and New Zealand wine Pisa Range Estate Marketing Manager Jenny Hawker said yesterday. "It is very exciting for a small vineyard to be up against the best wines in the world and win gold – best in class. We were one of only four pinot noir wines to achieve the "gold – best in class" status. These four wines then went on to compete for the pinot noir Trophy. Since launching our label in 2000 we have strived for excellence and feel with this win we have come close to achieving that." Pisa Range Estate wines were listed at top class restaurants in the United States and Australia.

In his regular column 'Good Drinking' - Sydney Morning Herald wine writer Huon Hooke recently featured Central Otago Pinot Noir. Some extracts "...One thing that's not in doubt is quality. At the recent Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration in Queenstown, the evidence was overwhelming".
